Representation of Women in Modern Japan: Biographies and Female subjectivity

Yumi Hirata, Osaka University, Division of Studies on Cultural Dynamics, Graduate School of Letters

A pretty princess, a brave woman warrior and a wicked witch – these various female protagonists are not only living their lives in the stories but also could have a significant impact on the lives of the readers. In this lecture, we will explore the socio-cultural meaning of "the ideal woman", focusing on women's magazines which appeared as new media at the end of the 19th century when Japan joined the ranks of modern nation-states alongside the West.
